21. The response of the essentially British colonial university
system in Ireland to the rising tide of Irish nationalism was complex.
For example, there was a school of thought in TCD (associated with
Fitzgerald) which would have pulled up the roots and gone to London
had the Gladstone/Parnell Home Rule Bill gone through. There are many
parallels between 19th century Ireland and 20th century Kenya and
Rhodesia.
