GEORGE HOWARTH MP

PARLIAMENTARY UNDER SECRETARY OF STATE

Born on 29 June 1949, Mr Howarth was educated at Huyton Hey School and Kirkby College, Merseyside; Liverpool Polytechnic and Salford University.

His career included work as an apprentice engineer, teacher, development officer for the Co-operative Development Society and chief executive of the Wales Co-operative Centre.

The Member of Parliament for Knowsley North and Sefton East, Mr Howarth was first elected to Parliament on 13 November 1986. The Opposition spokesman on Housing from 1989-1992, Environment from 1993-1994 and Home Affairs from 1994, he was appointed Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State at the Home Office on 5 May 1997.

Mr Howarth joined the Northern Ireland Office Ministerial team on 2 August 1999 as Parliamentary Under Secretary of State with responsibility for political development. Prior to devolution his portfolio included Health and Social Services, Equality and Human Rights issues and community relations.

Married, with two sons and a daughter, Mr Howarth lists his interests as reading, angling and football.
